Anyone remember the original Main St. Farmers' Market?
Morning, everyone.
We're unearthing some old content from the vault, going back more than a decade. It's good to know our history, so we're at work on collecting stories from the original Main St. Farmers' Market.
When did it start? Who started it? Why? We'll have a story soon.
We also found some old footage from the original Gaining Ground movement, which began in 2010 as a coordinated, intentional effort to reform and strengthen Chattanooga's regional food landscape.
Funded by the Benwood Foundation, Gaining Ground did herculean, transformative work, sowing the seeds for much of today's local food community.
Jeff Pfitzer, the instrumental director of Gaining Ground and so much related work, shared these videos.
(To clarify: today, Gaining Ground Grocery is the Chattanooga Food Center's Highland Park grocery store, which sells, among many other things, local produce and bulk-bin items. The folks there are amazing; the store is a hidden treasure. Similar name, part of the same movement, but different entity.)
In the coming days, look for our people's history of the Main St. Farmers' Market. If you have any stories, email us.
Finally, we leave you with another installment of our new "Food on your Phone" series. Again, thankfully, these are from Sarah.
- Have you enjoyed the Little Coyote patio yet? Its views and bright, open air have you feeling like you are miles away from home. The margaritas also don't hurt.
- Cows make the most incredible faces while eating. You can look forward to more on this in coming weeks!
- First squash harvest of the season! Anyone else always underestimate how much room these plants take up in their gardens?
- Local ribeye from Norton Dairy Farm. Thank you, Sammy Norton!
This Sunday, a beautiful story about a Missouri auction, friendship and farming in rare, precious ways.
Have a fabulous week, everyone. Goes without saying: but thanks for everything.
